Toyota GR 86 facelift goes on sale in Japan

The mildly refreshed Toyota GR 86 is already up for grabs starting from ¥3,195,000 (U.S. $20,190). The scope of updates may seem minor, but the ergonomics changes seem well-appointed and there’s a new transmission available for the limited-run Cup Car Basic spec.

For starters, Toyota says that power steering now lets you lean far more precisely into corners thanks to reduced rolling and wobbling. The 2.4-liter flat-four under the hood stays the same, but gets a new control unit for its throttle valve. This results in sharper throttle response across a variety of scenarios, such as when stepping on the gas straight out of a turn, the company claims.

Inside the cabin, most physical buttons and other controls now feature textured surfaces to make them easily identifiable by touch. The pedestrian and cyclist detection system now makes its decisions based on three cameras instead of two, including a new one with an ultrawide-angle lens. Last but by no means least, the Cup Car Basic spec mentioned above can now be obtained with an automatic transmission instead of the standard manual.

The 2027 Toyota GR 86 for Japan continues to churn out its usual 235 PS (232 hp / 173 kW) and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) of torque.
