Maserati Quattroporte gears up to become a petrol-electric SUV

Speaking on the phone during a recent press conference, Maserati Chief Operations Officer Santo Ficili made it known that the company was looking to electrify its Nettuno V6 and produce a new Quattroporte car that would “erase the line between sedan and crossover”.

According to him, the corresponding market segment is still unpopulated. There is a demand for a model like that, but satisfying this demand necessitates a bold and innovative approach. Just because the name “Quattroporte” literally means “four-door car” doesn’t mean an SUV cannot rock it, Ficili claims. Apparently, Maserati has already gathered enough feedback from those interested in the model and should be able to launch it before the end of the decade.

Among other things, it’s possible that the first SUV in the Quattroporte family will be powered by a mild-hybrid system based on Maserati’s in-house-designed Nettuno V6. The emphasis here is on “mild”: According to Ficili, those interested in prolonged all-electric driving should look at the Folgore EV lineup instead. Before the new Quattroporte, the company may launch a new Grecale SUV with the same electrified V6, but this remains speculative.

In the meantime, the Quattroporte model celebrated its 60th anniversary just two years ago (see video).
