Ford GT40 gets reanimated on Audi R8 underpinnings

South African tuning company Cape Advanced Vehicles (CAV) has announced a revival project dedicated to the legendary first-gen Ford GT40 from the 1960s. Although it never mentioned the source of the chassis, there are multiple indications that the Audi R8 plays the donor this time around.

In particular, it is official that the modern replica relies on a 4.2-liter, twin-turbo engine connected to an Inconel exhaust system. The mill revs up to 9,000 RPM and can output 800 PS (789 hp / 588 kW) along with 880 Nm (649 lb-ft) of torque. The numbers are in line with those of a tuned R8 coupe.

Customers will be choosing from as many as three transmission types including manual, single-clutch auto and dual-clutch auto. All-wheel drive will be standard regardless of that choice, taking the car from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in three seconds flat.

The exterior of the car seen here can probably be described as polarizing. It does resemble the GT40 with its body panels and wrap, but modern proportions and size kind of ruin the illusion. On the other hand, CAV presents the modern chassis as an advantage, arguing that it’s a much better car for driving on a daily basis than the GT40 ever was.

Only 40 units will be made. All prices are private, but orders are already running.
