General Motors has released details regarding the powertrain options for the redesigned 2027 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500. The lineup will feature two new small block V-8 engines, a turbocharged four-cylinder, and a Duramax diesel.
The new V-8 engines include a 5.7-liter unit replacing the 5.3-liter, and a 6.6-liter replacing the 6.2-liter. The 5.7-liter V-8 produces 402 horsepower and 428 pound-feet of torque, while the 6.6-liter offers 481 horsepower and 501 pound-feet of torque. Both engines feature higher compression ratios, larger throttle diameters, new intake manifolds, and a new lubrication system with a continuously variable oil pump. GM states these engines are designed for towing, off-road performance, and long road trips.
The 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, branded TurboMax, will serve as the base motor. It delivers 350 horsepower and 455 pound-feet of torque, an increase from its predecessor. This engine is now paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. The 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six Duramax diesel engine maintains its 305 horsepower and 495 pound-feet of torque, with updates to components such as pistons, turbo vane, and fuel injectors. It also features a larger DEF tank and an optional 34-gallon fuel tank.
Maximum towing capacity for the Silverado 1500 with the 5.7-liter V-8 is 13,700 pounds, while the Sierra 1500 can tow up to 13,500 pounds. The maximum payload for the 2027 trucks is 2,340 pounds, achievable with the TurboMax engine. Fuel economy figures for the new Silverado are yet to be announced, but GM indicates the new engines are more efficient than the previous V-8s. Production of the new V-8 engines will occur at Flint Engine Operations, Tonawanda Propulsion, and St. Catharines Propulsion.
