Hyundai and Kia have filed a patent application for a modular hardtop design that uses magnets. The patent describes a hardtop composed of two side panels, a rear panel, and a roof panel. Magnets are intended to help align and secure these pieces during assembly or disassembly.
The proposed assembly process involves placing the side panels, followed by the rear piece, which attaches with magnets. This allows for the attachment of plastic nuts. The roof panel then drops into place, guided and held by magnetism, before internal latches are secured. The hardware for these latches is described as similar to those found on current Bronco and Wrangler hardtops.
This magnetic and modular design could potentially allow for single-person operation. The patent application also suggests that the combination of magnets and latches could vary in a production version. This development is relevant given Hyundai's stated interest in the off-road vehicle market, potentially with a body-on-frame vehicle for North America, which could be accompanied by a related pickup truck.
