Texas-based Hennessey Performance has walked the road from tuning company to full-blown automaker with the launch of its Blackbird coupe. Built around a custom chassis, bodywork and powertrain, it’s meant to elevate drivers to emotional heights – and it’s not difficult to see how.
The gorgeous coupe wears a carbon-fiber body atop a monocoque made from the same lightweight material, resulting in a curb weight as little as 1,360 kilograms (3,000 lbs). The exterior design contains obvious stylistic nods to the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird spy plane, but is otherwise its own thing. Top-of-the-line adaptive suspension and bespoke wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 rubber round off the “track rocket” look.
And the Blackbird has every reason to look the part. Its 6.2-liter naturally aspirated V8 revs up to 9,000 RPM and beyond, and can easily push 862 PS (850 hp / 634 kW) to the wheels. A six-speed manual transmission lets it snap off the line and go 0-96.6 km/h (0-60 mph) in 2.5 seconds, while the top speed lies at a lofty 354 km/h (220 mph).
As impressive as all of the above sounds, the interior somehow manages to one-up the rest of the design. If you struggle to spot even a single touchscreen, that’s only because there are none. Hennessey offers tactile, physical buttons and controls for every function you may need, and while there’s a multimedia on board, it can only be accessed from the driver’s smartphone. There’s a dedicated cradle for it that owners may decide to use or to avoid.
Only 71 such vehicles will be delivered, each priced from an eye-watering $2,500,000. The first example built will debut at the Monterey Car Week in California on next Saturday, August 14, 2026. Actual customer deliveries won’t begin until 2029, though.
