Toyota has revealed a new DKR GR FC Hilux prototype, which is intended to compete in the 2027 Dakar Rally. The race truck features a hydrogen fuel cell powertrain, departing from the internal combustion engines typically used in such vehicles. This hydrogen-powered vehicle is being developed as a testbed for potential future production models.
The new DKR GR FC Hilux is based on the GR DKR Hilux EVO T1+, which will also participate in the race. The hydrogen version is visually distinct with a unique white and blue livery. It retains the custom bodywork and chassis of the original rally truck, including a shorter wheelbase compared to the roadgoing Hilux, high-clearance fenders, oversized tires, and long-travel suspension.
Toyota has not disclosed the output of the electric motors or the estimated range of the fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) system. The V6-powered version is limited to 400 hp and 660 Nm of torque by FIA regulations. The fuel cell operation produces water emissions. The DKR GR FC Hilux is planned to compete in the Dakar Future Mission 1000 category for experimental vehicles, aiming to cover over 1,000 km of challenging terrain over 13 stages. Toyota's objective is to advance the technology, focusing on fuel cell downsizing, improved cooling, and enhanced durability.
Toyota has previously indicated plans to introduce an FCEV variant of the production Hilux in 2028. This road-legal truck is expected to offer a range of 400 km and a towing capacity of 2,500 kg, providing an alternative to fully electric and mild-hybrid diesel versions. Gazoo Racing’s primary Dakar contender, the GR DKR Hilux EVO T1+, will also be part of the race program.
